What is the best chilli pepper to grow?

Here goes..
Does anyone have experience of growing chillis from seeds; the long chilli pepper type that can be used in Indian & Mexican foods?

If so, do you have any useful tips (species, techniques etc..) that you could share?
Ideally I'd need to grow these on a sunny window sill as I'm in the UK!
